Resources for Student Loan Debt Repayment

Based on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, the one-time student loan debt relief plan is no longer available. This means that the U.S. Department of Education’s pause on student loan payments and 0% interest rate period has ended. Student loan interest returned in September 2023, and payments are due starting in October. If you are impacted and have student loans to repay, there are resources that may help you manage your repayment.

Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Forgiveness

An IDR plan sets your monthly payment based on your income and family size. Your monthly payment amount can increase or decrease if your income or family size changes from year to year. You need to provide your loan servicer with updated income and family size information each year so that they can recalculate your payment. If you repay your loans with an IDR plan, the balance on your student loans will be forgiven after 20 or 25 years of payments. Click here to apply for an IDR plan.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

If you work full-time for a government or not-for-profit organization, you may be eligible for PSLF. The PSLF Program can forgive the balance of your Direct Loans after 10 years of payments through an IDR plan or the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan. Use the PSLF Help Tool to check if you’re eligible and submit your PSLF form.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness

If you teach full-time for five consecutive years at a qualifying school, you may be eligible for Teacher Loan Forgiveness for up to $17,500. To be eligible, you must have been employed at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves low-income students. You can apply by submitting a completed Teacher Loan Forgiveness Application to your loan servicer.

Military Service

To recognize your service to our country, there are benefits available from the U.S Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Defense to help you with your student loans. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 2023 EEOC SUES WALMART FOR DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION    Retailer Based Continued Employment on an Unlawful Qualification Standard, Federal Agency Charges             LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Walmart, Inc. and Walmart Stores Arkansas, LLC, a multi­national retailer, violated federal law when it subjected a nationwide class of employees with disabilities to unlawful testing, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.           According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, in 2015, Walmart collaborated with a third-party entity to create the “Pathways Training Program,” including a test called the “Pathways Graduation Assessment.” By January 2017, Walmart required its newly hired hourly associates at its Supercenters and Neighborhood Market Stores across the U.S. to complete the program. The EEOC’s suit alleges Walmart terminated employees with disabilities across the U.S., including two in Arkansas, who failed the test after three attempts even though the employees satisfactorily performed their jobs.           One former Arkansas employee worked at a Supercenter store in North Little Rock, and another former Arkansas employee worked at a Neighborhood Market Store in Fayetteville. Because of their disabilities, neither Arkansas employee passed the Pathways Graduation Assessment, and Walmart dismissed both employees despite their satisfactory job performance. The EEOC’s suit said the test was not related to the employees’ job duties or job performance.           Such alleged conduct violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The EEOC filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, Fayetteville Division, Civil Action No. 5:23-cv-05149, after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process. Paga tus préstamos estudiantiles en lugar de pagarles a los estafadores

Es probable que lo hayas escuchado en las noticias: a partir de octubre, se reanudan los pagos de los préstamos estudiantiles. Pero los estafadores podrían tratar de decirte que te pueden ayudar a evitar el repago, bajar el monto de tus pagos o conseguir que te condonen los préstamos, a cambio de un precio. Así es como puedes detectar y evitar estas estafas.

La cosa más importante a saber: la mejor fuente de información acerca de tus préstamos estudiantiles federales es el sitio web de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes. Además, no tienes que pagar para inscribirte en los programas para reducir el monto de tus pagos ni para obtener una condonación: te puedes inscribir gratuitamente en StudentAid.gov/repay. Y puedes hacerlo por tu cuenta. Y también gratuitamente.

• No confíes en la gente que se comunique contigo y te prometa un alivio de deuda o una condonación de préstamo, aunque te digan que están afiliados con el Departamento de Educación. Para tratar de parecer creíbles, los estafadores usan nombres, sellos y logotipos de aspecto oficial. Prometen acceso especial a planes de repago u opciones de condonación, ambas cosas no existen. Si sientes la tentación, desacelera, cuelga el teléfono e inicia sesión en tu cuenta de préstamo estudiantil para revisar tus opciones.

Mientras te preparas para el repago de tus préstamos, aquí tienes algunos pasos a seguir:

• Actualiza tu información de contacto ante FSA y el administrador de tu préstamo. De esta manera, recibirás actualizaciones puntuales sobre tus planes de repago.
