AI: ¿RETROCESO O QUIEBRA?

      La I.A. siempre ha sido una industria basada en la novedad. la promesa de ChatGPT en su página web siempre ha sido algo parecido a "encuentra inspiración creativa, aprende algo nuevo". Sin embargo, cuando se trata de los detalles, siempre ha sido famosamente inadecuada en lo que se refiere a los detalles, (busque A.I. manos si quiere una prueba rápida), Económicamente, A.I. ha tratado de empujarse a sí misma en tantos mercados como sea posible, principalmente cuando se trata de esfuerzos creativos como la ilustración y la escritura. Sencillamente, la tecnología es más cara que los métodos que ya se utilizan. Incluso grandes empresas tecnológicas como Google o Meta (antes conocida como Facebook) han tenido dificultades para hacer que estas tecnologías funcionen.

    Además, la regulación de la inteligencia artificial está aumentando en todo el mundo. Siempre lleva tiempo que la ley se ponga al día con el progreso, y hemos llegado a ese punto. Además, se han establecido requisitos y medidas de transparencia obligatorios para cualquier empresa que quiera entrar en este campo. Aunque Estados Unidos ha permitido un mercado relativamente libre para la Inteligencia Artificial a nivel nacional, ha presionado en la asamblea de la ONU para aumentar la regulación global de la Inteligencia Artificial, lo que puede ser indicativo de una agenda a largo plazo. En definitiva, parece que cada vez será más difícil entrar en este campo. 

   En definitiva, hoy en día es difícil dedicarse a la inteligencia artificial. Es fácil ver el marketing y la notoriedad de empresas como OpenAI, sin embargo, si vas a entrar en la industria es importante saber lo que está sucediendo dentro de ella. La I.A. va a cambiar el mundo, pero cuanto más cambien las cosas más permanecerán igual. AI: SET-BACK OR BUST?

     A.I. has always been an industry based on novelty. the promise of ChatGPT on its website has always been something along the lines of "find creative inspiration, learn something new." However, when it comes to the details, it has always been famously inadequate when it comes to details, (look-up A.I. hands if you want quick prove), Economically, A.I. has tried to push itself into as many markets as possible, primarily when it comes to creative endeavors such as illustration and writing. Naturally people have tried to begin enterprises relating to A.I. and the renting of their technology. However, as time has gone on, and as the novelty of the technology has faded, how viable is it really to open an A.I. centered firm.

    The market has been tough on everyone. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the consumer price index has index has increased by 0.55 %. $100 dollars in the January of 2000 will get you the same as $185.03 in the March of 2024. This has naturally has affected the A.I. Business such as Stability A.I. or Anthropic have struggled to meet the gap between their expenses and their profits. The big names in the industry, ChatGPT or similar products, have failed to find a viable strategy to raise funds so that they make-up for the costs in developing their technologies. Quite simply, the technology is just more expensive than methods already in use. Even big tech companies like Google or Meta (previously known as Facebook) have struggled to make these technologies work. 

    In addition, all around the world A.I. regulation is on the rise. It always takes time for law to catch-up with progress, and we have reached that point. In the European Union, since last year regulations have been put in place to protect and control the A.I. market. Bio-metrics, emotional reading, and predictive policing have all been restricted under the Parliament's law. There are exceptions made for edge cases and emergencies, but otherwise A.I. seems to be something to not be liberally used in the Union. In addition, transparency requirements and measures have been made obligatory for any company seeking to enter the field. The US has also made moves to push towards more regulation when it comes to A.I. Even as the USA has allowed for a relatively free market for A.I. domestically, it has made pushes in the UN assembly to increase global regulation for A.I., which may be indicative of a long term agenda. All in all, it seems it will only become more and more difficult to enter the field. 

   Ultimately, it has become difficult to be in A.I. these days. It is easy to see the marketing and notability of companies like OpenAI, however if you are going into the industry it is important to know what is happening within it. A.I. is going to change the world, but the more things changes the more they will stay the same. The reason why these facts are assessed is so that one can make the best decision on what to invest in or what to make into your livelihood. A.I. is here to stay, so we need to learn both how it will change the world, and how it will not.

 With Days 'till Christmas...

    It is a truism that regardless of time and place, there will always be con artists abound. As the year winds down, it is still important, perhaps even more so, to look out for such deception and ripoffs. So we have gathered a list of things to look out for this season and how to avoid them.

Fake Online Stores

 People have been faking stores since before the birth of Christ and in the information age these scams have taken a new form. While browsing the web you may find links or ads for stores that may carry high quality items with mind-boggling discounts. During the holidays, when people are busy trying to get gifts for the loved ones, they may be tempted by such offers. However, these consumers often find their credit cards stolen or not getting what they paid for. Always be sure to question, how are they able to afford to give away items like these? The answer often is, they don't.

An answer would be that instead of clicking on an ad to reach the website, instead reach it by looking the URL through a browser. If you go there and see that the discounts on the ad are not there, you know the ad was a con. Also, price comparing the item across internet platforms can give you an idea on how the item is valued by the market. Services like in-person pickup at real locations usually guarantees the legitimacy of such sellers.

Missed Delivery Notifications & Package Delivery Theft

 There is a poetic irony on how rates of theft increase as we enter the yuletide. You may have seen messages either in your inbox or texts saying that your package could not be delivered. Be aware, these messages could be thieves trying to create an opportunity for them to steal your packages. Some of these notifications even have links designed to steal your personal information. We suggest installing security features such as cameras looking at the front door. If not, most delivery services will deliver your packages to a more secured location if you ask, whether that is a PO box or to a loved one. And if you can afford it, if the item is valuable enough, consider shipping insurance.

Gift Cards Scams

Never trust anyone who asks for money in the form of a gift card. Always purchase gift cards at legitimate places like the grocer of the bank. In addition, be careful of additional fees on the card. The card should have them on the back, and if not: leave.

Fake Charities

'Tis the season for giving, and none know that better than grifters.  Fake charities are straightforward schemes. They lie about who they are and where the money is going. However, it is because the con can be so simple that they can take many forms. They may use pictures of needy children or spin stories of injured family members, and how they will not be able to come home for Christmas unless YOU, yes you specifically, give them a little bit of generosity. The best way to avoid these cons is vigilance. Look for typos or be skeptical of claims you may belief false. Check the Better Business Bureau with the charities URL to see what they have been able to dig up about the organization. A lack of contact information should raise alarms, and typos are a sign of a fake.

Phishing Messages

You should always be suspicious of  strange links you may get in you emails or text messages. With the holiday hustle, our attention may be split into multiple directions. As such we may not think of what could happen if we'd click on this link or that one. Beware notifications claiming to be your bank or credit card company. These are usually just cons to get you to reveal your login credentials for those accounts. 

In addition, there are no such things as free get always, or prompts to get you free prizes by being the nth visitor to a website. Never trust the promise of getting something for free as a surprise, specially from the internet. If you do feel the need to check whether your accounts have been compromise, use your banks website or app to check directly, most legitimate establishments work like that.

Fraudulent Seasonal Jobs

People often need extra spending money for the season. Whether it is for heating or for gifts, employment increases during the holidays. Naturally, scammers are known to take advantage of this. They may make fake ads for jobs that pay a lot for little work. There are many ways this could end poorly. The job may ask for personal information such as social security, date of birth, or even financial information. In addition, they may ask you for an upfront pay for equipment. You could also be used as a money mule, in which  they cash in money from other criminal activities, keep a portion, and then send the rest to the employer, in order to launder the earnings. To avoid these, always make sure to check the job is real, and question, why would someone be willing to pay so much for something they should be able to do themselves.

 The Federal Reserve has an important job. As the country goes into an extended period of inflation, the Federal Reserve has orchestrated a rise in interest rates in order to combat this. However, the effects have not being felt equally. If anything, it would seem like big businesses are out-competing smaller ones.

    Talmon Joseph Smith and Joe Rennison, in their New York Times article, Corporate America Has Dodged the Damage of High Rates. For Now., they describe the reason why big business is more resilient to spikes in interest rates than small businesses. It mostly has to do with bonds. Before the raise in interest, corporate America was able to secure funds from cheap bonds. An analyst from the Apollo asset management firm has gone on record saying that around 1 third of government debt will mature over the next 12 months from now, (De Mott, 2023). However, small firms have more urgent problems.

    The article by Smith and Rennison, describes a trend within small businesses. Such businesses fund their operations through more expensive means. Some of the more common methods involve taking out loans, and using business credit cards. These means make them more sensitive to increases in interest rates. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, ''Now, they’re paying 10 percent interest on short-term loans.'' (Smith & Rennison, 2023) It has been shown that these firms are not hiring as much anymore, while their credit debts keep increasing.

    There is a silver lining. As inflation seems to be slowing to a stop, the Federal Reserve will most likely be motivated to cease increasing interest rates to maintain economic balance. So whatever pressures small business may be facing currently, these financial woes may be mostly temporary.
